Communication rant

Today I’d like to talk about communication; communications in the workplace,
communication at home, pretty much communication in general. We've all heard
time and time again that communication is the key to a successful <fill in
the blank>, but how do we ensure that proper communication is happening and
not being lost in transition?

As technology is enabling us to communicate at never before seen speeds, the
message is getting blurred along that way. It seems, that society has begun to
block out ALL messages that are sent our way. So, when does communication turn
into noise?

Cell phones, PDA’s, email, voice mail, and the Omni-present
Google (and all of their services) have put information at our finger tips. Yet,
it seems that nothing will ever replace the face to face conversation.

We really have to take a step back and look at what we have
begun to do. The newest forms of communication all depend on writing skills. So
instead of improving our writing skills text messages, emails and the like have
actually hampered them. When was the last time you read (or used) LOL in stead
of writing out “that’s funny”. I’m guilty of this.

What’s even worse is that these type of shortcuts turn into
language skills, like saying “like” in every other word. People can’t express
them selves any more and are too afraid, or lazy, to take a break from there
200 word per minute sentence and thinking about their words and then enunciate.

So you may be asking, “JB, I don’t follow what your saying?”

Well if this is the case, you may want to try turning off
your I-Pod and taking off the ear phones and THEN try reading this again.
